For years, many of us thought we knew Jack Murtha. He supported a strong national defense and voted in line with the conservative cultural values of his southwestern Pennsylvania community.
But in his determination to gain more power for himself, he has cast those values aside. Now he apparently cares more about cultivating the respect and the votes of the liberal Democrats who make up the House Democratic caucus than he cares about cultivating the respect and the votes of those he was elected to represent in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Add to that his mounting woes on the ethics front -- designation by an independent, liberal congressional watchdog group as one of Congress's "most corrupt" Members, and a demand for a federal investigation to determine whether or not he broke the law by trading tens of millions of dollars in earmarked federal appropriations for hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions ...
